My computer is a new HP w/ a Vista operating system. I have used my laptop on numerous other wireless networks. I have had all kinds of issues setting up this AT and T service and have previously had no problems with other services. I bought the wireless modem from AT and T ';2WIRE 2701HG-B';. I have gone through the entire AT and T setup a few times and the AT and T home network site. I have read several of the other answers on Y! Answers and they have not helped either. My modem is working on the ethernet, but I cannot figure out how to use wireless!! I am so frustrated - - if someone could help, I would greatly appreciate it. (Adapter Problem)?
What it sounds like is actually not a problem in itself but can be a problem. The fact that you use 2 different routers sounds like the issue. When you connect to a residential router, your router assigns your adapter an IP address. Each router uses its own range of addresses. So when you connect to your mums router, that router assigns an address to your adapter. If connect to your nans router, then that router will assign you an address. The problem can lie when your going between routers and getting address. The address assigned from one router may conflict with the other router and may not work. Thats why when you reset your adapter you get a new address and then it seems to work. Thats the way wireless seems to connect automatically, but its not intelligent enough! The address assignment is suppose to make things easier for you and me. Now sorry if you already knew that.

Now if you do not have Windows Zero Config in your services, that could be a problem because that simplifiies and speeds up the process. That service should have been installed along with windows vista on your computer as it is a vital service.

I suggest backing up your documents and files that you can't afford to lose and then do system restore. If that does not restore the proper services then the only thing would be to reinstall windows. To do that you need your Vista CD. Let me know if you need help doing that. I'm sorry that you have to deal with this but thats another irritating factor about wireless technology and the services that windows should provide but doesnt. Hope this helps!Setsukohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15568486278643502109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3741023100700998108.post-20325313713121759782010-08-20T23:25:00.001-07:002010-08-20T23:25:20.652-07:00Is the Dell Insiron 1520 with these specs good for WoW and if so how good?these are the specs ignore the product number and quatity

223-3191 1 Inspiron 1520, Intel Core 2 Duo T7250, 2.0GHz, 800Mhz 2M L2 Cache

313-5395 1 Jet Black Color with Matte Finish

311-7215 1 2GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm

320-5460 1 15.4 inch Wide Screen WXGA LCDTrueLife

320-5639 1 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT

341-4770 1 160G 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive

420-6556 1 Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition, English

310-9093 1 DELL RESOURCE DVD,BACK-UP INSP 1520

420-5769 1 Internet Search and Portal

420-5924 1 Icon Consolidation Application

420-6436 1 Vista, PC-Restore, Dim/Insp

420-6995 1 DELL SUPPORT 3.4,DIM/INSP

463-2282 1 Dell Owners Manual installed on your system, click on icon after system set-up to access

420-7024 1 Media Direct 3.3

420-7244 1 Dell Support Center 1.0

430-0493 1 Integrated 10/100 Network Cardand Modem, for Inspiron

420-7468 1 ADOBE ACROBAT READER 8.1 DIM/INSP

313-5197 1 8X DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive

420-6464 1 Roxio Creator Basic

313-4783 1 Integrated High Definition Audio 2.0

430-2334 1 Intel 3945 WLAN (802.11a/g) Mini Card

320-5692 1 NO WEBCAM OPTION

420-7701 1 Trend Micro PC-cillin InternetSecurity, English, 30-Days Subscription

312-0526 1 85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery, for Inspiron 1520

412-0933 1 AOL for Broadband

412-0934 1 Earthlink

412-0935 1 NETZERO ISP

412-0915 1 MS WORKS 8.5

950-9797 1 No Warranty, Year 2 and 3

950-3337 1 1 Year Limited Warranty

412-0360 1 Soft Contracts - Banctec

987-5427 1 Dell Hardware Warranty PlusOnsite Service, Initial Year

983-3070 1 Type 3- Third Party At HomeService, 24x7 TechnicalSupport, Initial Year

960-2780 1 Warranty Support,Initial Year

320-5841 1 Jet Black color w/o Camera

310-8628 1 You have chosen a Windows Vista Premium System

310-9348 1 Intel Centrino Core Duo Processor

466-7698 1 Thank you for choosing Dell

420-7091 1 DataSafe Online Dim/Ins/XPS

420-7092 1 DataSafe Online Dim/Ins/XPS 1YR-FREE

987-4817 1 Insp Datasafe 3GB,1YR(Incl in price),DHS

988-0099 1 To activate your online backupaccount, go to Start, Programs, DataSafe Online

330-0171 1 S and P Drop-in-Box Marcom forDHS NotebooksIs the Dell Insiron 1520 with these specs good for WoW and if so how good?
That notebook should be suitable for WoW and any other games you want to play. If I would put a card into that drive, the icon would appear in full color. In the system Registry (or in Disk Management or anywhere else), is there a way to set this up? (in regedit, I am looking at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\DriveIco鈥?) This way, I'll have Icon A appear when there's nothing in the drive, and Icon B appear when I put a card in the drive. Thanks for the help!

NOTE: I am using Windows Vista Home Premium. The Registry key I mentioned early SEEMS to work exactly as it did in Windows XP, but I could be wrong.

ANOTHER NOTE: I am planning to use this on drives that do not neccesarily appear in Disk Management (ex: network memory card drives). If your method absolutely must use Disk Management and/or not work with network drives, then do post it, but otherwise try to avoid this kind of problem.

A third note (of slightly less significance): I used this article from PC Magazine to learn how to set up icons in the registry. It does not address my issue with having two icons for a drive. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,202鈥?/a>How do I change Windows drive icons?
To change the icon displayed within explorer for a drive requires changes to the windows registry.

1. Create (if it does not already exist) the registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Explorer\ DriveIcons\ X\ DefaultIcon

where 'X' is the drive letter of the drive for which you wish to change the drive icon.

2. Change the key's default value to hold the fully qualified name of the icon file (e.g. 'c:\myicons\cdrive.ico').

If the file contains more than one icon then follow it with a comma and the zero-based index of the icon (e.g. 'c:\myicons\mylib.dll,2').

3. To see the effect restart Windows - although, depending on the version of windows simply refreshing the window might be sufficient.Setsukohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15568486278643502109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3741023100700998108.post-15504627856406998052010-08-20T23:24:00.003-07:002010-08-20T23:24:48.930-07:00I'm having troubles connecting to my wireless signal with Ubuntu.?I recently installed Ubuntu as a secondary OS on my Dell Inspiron 1501. I have it set up so when I start my computer I can choose to boot either Windows Vista Home Premium (The original OS on the computer) or the newest version of Ubuntu, 8.04. I have always been able to connect to the Internet through the wireless signal my router is outputting on Vista. Unfortunately when I boot Ubuntu I try to connect to the signal by going to the top bar, clicking the network icon and clicking connect to other wireless network. I than type the SSID of my wireless network: dlink. It trys to connect but fails. Can someone please give me instructions on how to connect to the signal? His house has a 16 port switch set up in a cabinet in their game room where the cable modem is (they don't want the printer there). The 16 outputs are wired throughout the house to jacks in the wall. His printer is in his bedroom hooked to a laptop which he takes with him. He wants it so he or his wife can print from any computer in the house to the one printer in his room. I cant just simply 'share' the printer because he takes his laptop with him so I'd have to somehow connect the printer to the network directly. They also don't have wireless yet so I'd like to install that as well. Two of the PCs now have Vista on them which I've had wireless issues with in the past. If you were me, and he said 'money is not an issue', what router/printservers would you suggest and how would I hook them up with the existing network? What printserver should I use in a 16 outlet prewired home so you can print from any one of them.?
If you don't know what your doing, why are you undertaking the task? This is getting annoying as well as driving me crazy. What could be causing it? I have Trend Micro Internet Security on the desktop it's reading from (which has a 688 GB hard drive), and Panda Cloud Antivirus on the laptop that it's playing on. If it's my firewall settings, how do I change each so that I can have constant read times? Is this normal? If so, how do I get it to not do that? I'd rather not use Winamp Remote since it's on the same network, and both computers are on most of the time.

Both computers' specs:

Desktop- Gateway FX 6800-01e

Windows Vista Home Premium x64 SP2

2.9 GB DDR3 RAM

688 GB Hard Drive (7200 RPM, as far as I know, about 400 GB free)

Sound Blaster X-fi MB sound card

DVD-RW drive

Media card reader

ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB

Intel Core I7 920 (2.66 GHz per core)

Laptop- Asus M70Vm

Windows Vista Home Premium x86 SP1

4 GB DDR3 RAM

149 GB Hard Drive (7200 RPM I think, 30 GB currently free)

SD/MMC/Pro card reader

BD/DVD-RW drive (mind you, it doesn't burn blu ray discs, but not really important)

Nvidia GeForce 9600M GS 512 MB

Intel Core 2 Duo (2.26 GHz per core)

That's what both are running. I have absolutely no idea why this would be happening other than firewall settings. Both drives run at the same speed, so it isn't that. I've never had this problem when either the laptop or the desktop were playing their music on their own drives. I just reinstalled Winamp, and since I've already lost my play data about five times on this laptop, I'm not particularly interested on reinstalling it (though I probably SHOULD back up my play data, if I can figure out where it is). How do I get continuous playback from the other computer's files? I had all the music on this computer before, but I took them off and unified both copies of Winamp's libraries onto just my desktop's hard drive because I was running low on space (8.34 GB of music, much? BTW, that's all 320 KPBS mp3's and lower, mostly 256 KBPS.) and I have it backed up onto an older external drive (which I never had problems playing from, either). I'd rather have it playing well from the other drive rather than connecting the now 6-year-old external and playing it from there.

Another thing that I want to know: could it be the fact that I placed it in the public folder? I have both computers set to full access to all public files for all people on the network (which is via my password protected internet router, so suspecting people can't connect to it). Please, tell me what I can do to make this problem go away.Winamp having playback issues with networked files?
It is most likely a network bandwidth issue. Make sure there are no running applications using your internet/network (downloading).

Also.. make sure to go into winamp preferences, and under the PLAYBACK tab the thread priority is set to high. Then go PLUG-INS and OUTPUT to nullsoft direct output - go under the BUFFER tab - and increase those number - preferably to double what they are. That will allow your machine to download more of the song before it tries to play it so it is not as interrupted. Think of watching youtube videos... pause them, let the pink part get ahead a bit and THEN hit play - same concept.

Best of luck! winamp is a wonderful program
loan

microsoft
Setsukohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15568486278643502109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3741023100700998108.post-72483804580985456422010-08-20T23:23:00.001-07:002010-08-20T23:23:28.434-07:00How do you password-protect a shared folder?I'm setting up a network for a small business.

They used to have 2 HP / Compaq PCs running Windows XP (One has Home Edition and one Professional). The printer is not attached to any network, because it is not compatible with Wi-Fi, since it's an older printer. The printer is connected to a computer running Windows Vista Ultimate, and I am trying to install the printer on my Windows XP Media Center computer. I do have a home network, and printer sharing is enabled on both computers. How would I set up the printer on my Windows XP computer, when the printer is attached to a Windows Vista computer? I tried a lot of things, even Windows Help, but it didn't work. I am trying to share an HP DeskJet 970Cse. Both of the computers are connected to the same wireless access point. Can someone please explain to me step-by-step how I can do this? Can someone please help me share my printer?
The printer itself has to be networked adaptable and would work off either computer if so and could be set up to share. Check your printer's settings or it's manual to see if it can be networked. If not, HP has a kit that might work on your printer so it can be networked but it's pricey. Can someone please help me share my printer?
Here's what I have, 1 Mac, 1 PC, 1 Samsung Laser Printer, 1 Epson All in One Inkjet with Fax. I hooked it up correctly (I've set up enough routers to know how to set them up), and tried to connect. The only pages I can access are local pages, like the router set up page. I tried navigating to sites like facebook, hotmail, tried connecting the msn, nothing. So, I returned the router, and got a replacement. The new one was actually recognized by the computer (running vista), but still couldn't connect.

It should be noted that I have a D-Link DIR 655 and another linksys mini router that both work fine. It's possible that your ISP only allows a small number of source MAC addresses to come in on your modem, so you're locked out whenever you try to connect a new router (with a new MAC address).

To do this, go to Setup %26gt; MAC Address Clone from the router's web interface. My WRT54G2 Router (all of em) refuses to connect!?
The bridge thing is what bothers me. To start if you connect your modem to this router's WAN port and another wire from one of the LAN ports directly to a computer, does the computer recognize the router and allow connection to the modem and internet? If the wired connection works then you usually need to click Start, My Networkds then ';setup home/office network'; and give it the SSID and security Key. Are you saying that then the router then will still not connect? If so I have seen people say that vista premium does not connect to some routers. Not sure I believe that and you have perhaps the most sold router in existence. I'd go to the Linksys website and start a service call. They have been very helpful to me in the past.

Now the Bridge thing needs some work. Do you mean a bridge between two routers? If so go to the Linksys website and download the instructions for this. I am helping my uncle create a home network. He bought a new computer running Vista, and the old one is still on XP Home. I've got a Linksys router connected to broadband. The old computer built in ethernet port burnt out, so a Linksys PCI Ethernet adapter was installed into the old computer.

So far, the router is working as well as the internet on the new computer. When I try to network the old computer, I run into problems. I'm no IT expert, but it's not my first time with home networking, or with a linksys router. I've tried everything as far as trouble shooting, and it doesn't want to work.

When I try to set up the IP and Gateway, it still doesn't find the internet. When it tries to Auto Obtain IP, it always reverts to 169.254.208.17 as well as an odd hexidecimal value for the Default Gateway (I checked by using the IPCONFIG command).

If there are any suggestions or insights as to the problem and how to fix it, I greatly appreciate it.Problem with IP Auto Obtain?
If both PCs have internet access through the router the following is a wizard way that works for XP. Don't know how/if Vista differs.

Run the Network Setup wizard (found in Control Panel of XP). Tell it each of your computers connects to the internet via ';residential gateway'; and that you want to enable file and printer sharing. Create a disk at the end only if you have a Windows PC other than XP or 2k Pro.

Windows XP firewall (if SP2) will be properly configured by the wizard. You must uninstall or properly configure any 3rd party firewalls on each machine. Unique computer names and same workgroup, of course.

The Shared Documents folder is automatically shared. Any other folders (or drives) or printers you want to share, just right click on them and sharing ... . When sharing a printer, accept the offer to load other drivers if your other PCs have different Operating System(s).

This is for XP to Vista but should work for you

You had better copy and paste into word Doc and follow from there

When you first go into My Network Places there will be nothing there. The first time you click on 'View Workgroup computers' will probably result in great disappointment. It takes awhile (20 minutes or so) before all the computers in the workgroup get up-to-date and accurate lists of the other computers. Often you can speed up this process via Search for other computers.

When computers show up in My Network Places, double click on one to see its shares. If that includes a printer, you can right click on the printer to connect to it.Problem with IP Auto Obtain?
did you implement the proper DNS Server ip?

You can find the info in the status of the router.

You might need to add the mac address of the wireless comp to the Mac Filter in you Wireless Router Settings.

Get the mac address of the wireless comp by checking the details of the Local Area Connection. The MAC address or Physical Address should look something like this 00-00-00-00-00-00
First, make sure that the Linksys driver is installed (No ';?'; in Device manager under Network Adapters). If there is a ';?'; icon, you need to install the linksys driver.

Make sure that DHCP and NAT are turned on your router. If these are not turned on, this computer will not get an IP address from your router, and instead it may be passing the one IP address from your cable/DSL company through which may be going to your one PC before it. DHCP and NAT will assign private IP addresses to the LAN side of your router.

Next, check that your computer is connected to a LAN port on your router, not the WAN port. Make sure that your broadband (i.e. Cable/DSL modem) is connected to the WAN port. Reversing the ports will cause it to not get a valid IP address.

If this still does not work, check your cabling. You should use a standard (not crossover) cable between your linksys card and router. The cable you are using could be bad, too. You may want to try a different cable.Setsukohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15568486278643502109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3741023100700998108.post-72479630380338060842010-08-20T23:22:00.000-07:002010-08-20T23:22:15.506-07:00How do I add another PC to my wireless printer ?my hubby %26amp; I just recently bought a Lexmark series 6500 4 in one printer/fax/copier/scanner for home use. Also you should do a search on ebay looking at the custom built gaming systems that are out there that are competing with you. I know yours is designed as a multimedia not gaming rig, but just look at what you can get. I think your just expecting way too much for your used HP

http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/lagunshy_c鈥?/a>

sorry, I know that's not what you want to hear. How much can I sell my computer for?
Even with the upgrades your computer's price is not going to go up. The fact that it is a media center and has Vista will not be much of a selling point to most. You could get a custom build computer with the same specs new for maybe 500-600. so even 450 for a used one might be a bit high, but that would be closer than 1000.
Sadly, the most ';valuable'; item you listed is the HDD.

I would say if you got $200, you would be most fortunate.Setsukohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15568486278643502109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3741023100700998108.post-30792684027432639372010-08-20T23:21:00.001-07:002010-08-20T23:21:20.741-07:00How do I connect from one computer to the other wirelessly to share files?I have 2 computers at home. One desktop and one laptop, and occassionally my friends drop by with their laptops. I have a wireless network setup and I've been able to transfer files between my two computers wirelessly in the past. I would usually go to the network pane and find my other computer on the network. The thing is that it's not there and I'm not sure why it comes and goes if the computers are across from each other in the same room. What settings do I need to mess with so that my desktop computer (running on vista with windows firewall) identifies my wireless laptop (running on XP with mcafee firewall), and I can get files from there. Thanks. :)

fyi: Step by Step instructions would help alot because I've already been through all the steps of setting up a Wireless Network..etc..

How do I connect from one computer to the other wirelessly to share files?
your looking for ssh.. ahh i had a good tutorial on it.. but download tightvnc or something and try googling a ssh tutorial..How do I connect from one computer to the other wirelessly to share files?
Your problems are because Windows sucks major A$$ when it comes to networking. I have it set up to do file sharing with my Vista Premium laptop and that works just fine. So how would i go about getting my laptop to print to the printer via network?Network printing problems?
You may have some issues doing that. The printer must have Vista drivers loaded onto the Vista machine and then have the printer port pointed at the shared printer on the XP machine.

A lot depends on the printer, the printer drivers, if the printer has Vista drivers available and if the drivers will work over the network.

Check the printers manufacturers website and forums

Good LuckNetwork printing problems?
You need to have the printer driver set up on both machines and the printer set to share. Set up is the same as sharing file, but is done on the printer. You will now be able to printer wirelessly, but the computer attached to the printer will need to be switched on. This computer is almost 3 years old. Just recently, I opened up my internet (on IE, Firefox, AND Chrome) and when I try to navigate to an initial page, the progress bar says ';Waiting for %26lt;site%26gt;'; and never connects. I have reset all routers and my computer multiple times. I have even run the command prompt and ';ping-ed'; a website and all four pings come back positive. I have run multiple virus protection software and all scans have come back negative. I have even restarted the computer to ';Safe Mode with Networking';. When in this setting, the internet DOES actually work but virus scans in the mode still come back negative.

What is going on? How do I fix this?

Thank you all very much in advance.Internet is connected and working, but won't connect in browser on Vista?
My daughter had this problem with her daughter's account on her PC. It turned out to be the permissions for her daughters account and the firewall settings. Once we fixed these, there was no problem.

I hope that helps.Setsukohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15568486278643502109noreply@blogger.com0
