I'm having troubles connecting to my wireless signal with Ubuntu.?

I recently installed Ubuntu as a secondary OS on my Dell Inspiron 1501. I have it set up so when I start my computer I can choose to boot either Windows Vista Home Premium (The original OS on the computer) or the newest version of Ubuntu, 8.04. I have always been able to connect to the Internet through the wireless signal my router is outputting on Vista. Unfortunately when I boot Ubuntu I try to connect to the signal by going to the top bar, clicking the network icon and clicking connect to other wireless network. I than type the SSID of my wireless network: dlink. It trys to connect but fails. Can someone please give me instructions on how to connect to the signal? I would prefer being contacted by AIM other than this becuase I do not check my Yahoo account every day. So if you have an AIM screen name please send me a message there, my s/n is: ChaseMDuffin. Otherwise just post your answer here.I'm having troubles connecting to my wireless signal with Ubuntu.?

Hardware Recommendations for Photoshop?

Processors: Intel Core i7-940 Processor(8MB L3 Cache, 2.93GHz)

Memory: 8GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1066MHz - 6 DIMMs

I'm looking at getting my wife a new computer.

She mostly dose photo editing with photoshop (not sure which version)

mostly like avatar images and the moving kind nothing really over 500x500 but I know she can get up to 100 layers (I'm so just pulling this out of thin air from what conversations we have about her photoshoping lol)

Anyways, I love my wife so what I'm really looking for is someone that knows the inner workings of photoshop and what parts of the hardware are more critical than others, as it stands I'm looking at getting the low range i7 chip with 9GB of ram and at least a second HDD for a ';scrachdisk'; for photoshop. Anything else I should look at? Or any recommendations on how to set up this ';scrachdisk'; like would a Raid0 scrachdisk be better or will a 32bg SSD work better in place of a raid setup? I've hand build my rigs so don't be afraid to throw in computer gargon in your answer I can keep up.

as you can see I'm not really looking for hardware recommendation as much as I'm looking for good answers on what I should be looking for in my hardware selection.

This is what I'm looking at getting her:

It sounds good -- more than enough to run Photoshop well. If you're trying to get the absolute best performance out of it, and money isn't an issue, get two high-performance SSDs and put them in RAID-0 for use as a scratch disk. Or try a VelociRaptor hard drive (better yet, two in RAID-0). SSDs are generally faster than HDDs.

You should consider building your own computer instead of buying it from Dell. That way, you will have far more control over your hardware, have the ability to overclock, and will end up paying less for more performance.Hardware Recommendations for Photoshop?
As long as you have plenty of space and it runs fast and smooth, it should be fine. If anything, Macs would run more nicely with it than PC's, and a tablet would always be nice (I recommend wacom)
I have not heard that Adobe has accepted 64-bit and developed their programs to take advantage of this. Investigate this more closely or find out if you can work in a 32-bit mode if necessary.

Windows VistaHome Premium problem?

ok so i have a Dell inspiron 530s and it was pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Premium..i've had this computer for 2 years now and last year was when it gave a whole bunch of b.s.

I can't open some of my programs like when i try to open ';Connect to network'; it doesn't and then my Pictures folder and my Files folder freeze. I need Vista to stop acting stupid because i need to set up another Internet connection for my other computer and laptop but the ';Set up Internet Connection'; won't open either, Please i beg you if anybody has this problem and found a solution, plz help me and tell me ur secret. I need this computer to work...i asked everyone i possibly know but know one knows how to fix dis problem. My last resort is to restart my computer until the very beginning and I don鈥檛 want to lose all my files. I can't even save my files to a usb because vista always freezes on me:( Plz help! I really appreciate it. Thnx in advance,Windows VistaHome Premium problem?
Simple... Virus attack.. what you do is, install the Os again without formatting the drive.. After installing the windows gain, the old files on that drive will be saved in a new folder known as ';Windows_old'; under ';C:';.. None of your files will be deleted.. Know that Vista always Sucks..

If you don't know how to do that, ask some person who knows to install the Os and tell what i have said...

What printserver should I use in a 16 outlet prewired home so you can print from any one of them.?

My father in law asked me to set up a print server in his house. His house has a 16 port switch set up in a cabinet in their game room where the cable modem is (they don't want the printer there). The 16 outputs are wired throughout the house to jacks in the wall. His printer is in his bedroom hooked to a laptop which he takes with him. He wants it so he or his wife can print from any computer in the house to the one printer in his room. I cant just simply 'share' the printer because he takes his laptop with him so I'd have to somehow connect the printer to the network directly. They also don't have wireless yet so I'd like to install that as well. Two of the PCs now have Vista on them which I've had wireless issues with in the past. If you were me, and he said 'money is not an issue', what router/printservers would you suggest and how would I hook them up with the existing network? What printserver should I use in a 16 outlet prewired home so you can print from any one of them.?
If you don't know what your doing, why are you undertaking the task? Simple solution would be buy a wireless router that has a print server built in. Kills two birds with one stone.

In terms of hooking it up. Plug a cable into the wall outlet, and stick the other end into one of the switchports on the new router and your away.

Anymore questions, email meWhat printserver should I use in a 16 outlet prewired home so you can print from any one of them.?
Check CDW, Linksys, D-link, Office Depot and Staples. They all have print servers you can connect to the network and the printer.

They work like this:

the print server has a IP address

You point the printer driver on each computer to the IP address.

Each computer gets to print to the printer from any point on the network

The print servers come with setup software you install on each machine. It's pretty painless

Winamp having playback issues with networked files?

My problem is that it'll play for about 30 seconds, stop for three, and then start where it stopped. This is getting annoying as well as driving me crazy. What could be causing it? I have Trend Micro Internet Security on the desktop it's reading from (which has a 688 GB hard drive), and Panda Cloud Antivirus on the laptop that it's playing on. If it's my firewall settings, how do I change each so that I can have constant read times? Is this normal? If so, how do I get it to not do that? I'd rather not use Winamp Remote since it's on the same network, and both computers are on most of the time.

Both computers' specs:

Desktop- Gateway FX 6800-01e

Windows Vista Home Premium x64 SP2

2.9 GB DDR3 RAM

688 GB Hard Drive (7200 RPM, as far as I know, about 400 GB free)

Sound Blaster X-fi MB sound card

DVD-RW drive

Media card reader

ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB

Intel Core I7 920 (2.66 GHz per core)

Laptop- Asus M70Vm

Windows Vista Home Premium x86 SP1

4 GB DDR3 RAM

149 GB Hard Drive (7200 RPM I think, 30 GB currently free)

SD/MMC/Pro card reader

BD/DVD-RW drive (mind you, it doesn't burn blu ray discs, but not really important)

Nvidia GeForce 9600M GS 512 MB

Intel Core 2 Duo (2.26 GHz per core)

That's what both are running. I have absolutely no idea why this would be happening other than firewall settings. Both drives run at the same speed, so it isn't that. I've never had this problem when either the laptop or the desktop were playing their music on their own drives. I just reinstalled Winamp, and since I've already lost my play data about five times on this laptop, I'm not particularly interested on reinstalling it (though I probably SHOULD back up my play data, if I can figure out where it is). How do I get continuous playback from the other computer's files? I had all the music on this computer before, but I took them off and unified both copies of Winamp's libraries onto just my desktop's hard drive because I was running low on space (8.34 GB of music, much? BTW, that's all 320 KPBS mp3's and lower, mostly 256 KBPS.) and I have it backed up onto an older external drive (which I never had problems playing from, either). I'd rather have it playing well from the other drive rather than connecting the now 6-year-old external and playing it from there.

Another thing that I want to know: could it be the fact that I placed it in the public folder? I have both computers set to full access to all public files for all people on the network (which is via my password protected internet router, so suspecting people can't connect to it). Please, tell me what I can do to make this problem go away.Winamp having playback issues with networked files?
It is most likely a network bandwidth issue. Make sure there are no running applications using your internet/network (downloading).

Also.. make sure to go into winamp preferences, and under the PLAYBACK tab the thread priority is set to high. Then go PLUG-INS and OUTPUT to nullsoft direct output - go under the BUFFER tab - and increase those number - preferably to double what they are. That will allow your machine to download more of the song before it tries to play it so it is not as interrupted. Think of watching youtube videos... pause them, let the pink part get ahead a bit and THEN hit play - same concept.

Best of luck! winamp is a wonderful program

  • How do you password-protect a shared folder?

I'm setting up a network for a small business.

They used to have 2 HP / Compaq PCs running Windows XP (One has Home Edition and one Professional). They have just ordered another 2 PCs, which have Vista Home Premium. I am planning on using one of the old ones as a file %26amp; print server, which will also be connected to a shared backup drive.

I am, however, a bit anxious that, if somebody hacks in, they will have access to all of their files.

How do I make it shared folders password protected, so that you have to enter a password to get in. I used to do it with IIS I think, but I'm not sure.

Thanks in advance! How do you password-protect a shared folder?
surely you must have the same operating system throughout your network i can only forsee many problems arising here.

    good luck with the vista.

it's already due to be replaced by windows 7 next year was the proposed date,

that makes me think that vista was only released as a test bed for windows 7.

Can someone please help me share my printer?

I am trying to share a printer, but I am very confused. The printer is not attached to any network, because it is not compatible with Wi-Fi, since it's an older printer. The printer is connected to a computer running Windows Vista Ultimate, and I am trying to install the printer on my Windows XP Media Center computer. I do have a home network, and printer sharing is enabled on both computers. How would I set up the printer on my Windows XP computer, when the printer is attached to a Windows Vista computer? I tried a lot of things, even Windows Help, but it didn't work. I am trying to share an HP DeskJet 970Cse. Both of the computers are connected to the same wireless access point. Can someone please explain to me step-by-step how I can do this? Can someone please help me share my printer?
The printer itself has to be networked adaptable and would work off either computer if so and could be set up to share. Check your printer's settings or it's manual to see if it can be networked. If not, HP has a kit that might work on your printer so it can be networked but it's pricey. Can someone please help me share my printer?
Here's what I have, 1 Mac, 1 PC, 1 Samsung Laser Printer, 1 Epson All in One Inkjet with Fax. I use both printers from each computer. I bought a Printer Share Switch from Amazon.com. I can add a 3rd device it needed. No software, just plug and play.
