I have a desktop compaq that is hooked directly to a Netgear wgt624 router that is hooked up to a modem. I have 3 laptops ( one gateway, 2 toshibas). All are windows xp home except one toshiba is windows vista. All the computers can connect to the wpa protected wireless router. I am trying to set up a network with these 4 comps to share files and a printer. I have tried running through both home network wizard and wireless network wizard with no success. None of the computers recognize the other computers as part of a network in order to share files. If someone could help explain what I need to do to set up a network that allows the computers to be listed on the other computers then I understand how to share the files and printer. But I cannot find a way to get the computers to recognize one another.Help setting up my home network.?
Put all the PC's in the same workgroup. Right click on my computer Choose properties then Computer Name set the workgroup name the same on each PC.
Turn on Print and file sharing. Easiest way is to share a folder out. Right click on a folder and select sharing and security. Be sure you select the option to allow others to change files.
Make sure the firewall on EACH PC is set to allow print and file sharing. This may be windows firewall or whatever else you are using like Symantec or McAfee
Good Luck!!Help setting up my home network.?
AA:
TROUBLESHOOTING:
Can you ping the computers? if they are not pingable usually a firewall is interfering. If you disable it you should be able to see all the computers under the same domain.
Go to My network places/entire network/Microsoft windows network/ you should see your network there.. say it's called workgroup or whatever name you called it.. then if you click on it all the computers should be there.
Also, After joining the network sometimes you have to reboot the computers for them to show up under the network.
RUNNING THE WIZARD:
Also it is imperative that when you run the Network set up wizard that you select the middle option to the PCs joining the network, and that you select to ';Turn on file and printer sharing';
Now If you don't have a firewall interfering and you already rebooted the PC.
A POSSIBLE SOLUTION:
Perhaps you should start all over. Start fresh with the network. Make sure you create a Domain name and add all the PCs to that domain name. For instance, Home or workgroup. Remember if they are not the same domain they won't see each other.
From my experience and you seem to be doing everything right I am almost willing to bet it will be firewall related. But also reboot all the PCs after you have them all join the same network (home or workgroup or whatever name you called it).
One last note. When you View the Wireless network under the small icon on the bottom right.. are they all under the Wireless network you created? Sometimes an improperly set up neighbors wireless network can interfere. For instance if you wireless network is called Linksys and the Neighbors is called Joe鈥檚 home. Some PCs might accidentally login to his wireless network instead if he/she did not set up correctly with a security key. So double check that as well.
One last note. I always prefer Linksys wireless network equipment myself. NetGear and the other D-link can be trick to troubleshoot. and they don't seem to play well with other networking gear. But that was from my experience only. Whenever possible always stick with one brand don't mix and match.
Let me know how it turns out.
