How can I make a direct connection between vista and xp home?

I have read a lot of step by step instructions on this and I still cant make it work. I have a patch cable. Is that the same as a crossover cable? I have run the setup wizard on both computers. they both have different names and are on the same workgroup. File sharing is turned on on the computer i am trying to share files from. There is no indication, however, that any network exists between them. I have tried all of the wizards related to setting up a home of office network, but none of them do anything for me. I realize that the different OS might be an issue, but chances are it can be done and it would be easy if I were not so useless with networking. Anybody have any advice? How can I make a direct connection between vista and xp home?
Its probably the cable. Everyting else you did right. I have a network between Vista and XP machines using a router so it can be done. How can I make a direct connection between vista and xp home?
a network cable ( patch cable ) is not the same thing as a cross over cable for start so thats one of your issues

2nd once you get the cross over cable you have to set a ip (private) in the tcpip settings of each nic card so they can communicate
