I have several computers at my home all connected either by ethernet or by 802.11n radio, while I can get my computers with Vista and XP to play nice with themselves I can't seem to get the two to play together, I have tried setting up both an Ad Hoc and a regular router to network them, I can connect them but no file sharing, is there a program I can use, some setting in Vista? How to get XP and Vista to share files over Ad Hoc or Routed Network?
In order for Vista computers to see XP computers, you have to load LLTD on the XP machines.
All machines should be in the same workgroup. XP and Vista have different workgroup names by default, so change one.
The Vista network location has to be Private.
You have to manually enable file sharing, public folder sharing, printer sharing. Make sure you turn OFF password protected sharing unless you're only going to use the Public folder.
Right-click whatever Vista folder you're going to share, choose Share, and select Guest or Everyone. Also change the permissions if you want to be able to change something from the xp machine.
I think that covers it. You could also check out:
