i have a vista premium laptop, a xp home pc and a hp 4200 printer. ive set up a home network with my vista and xp on it. im trying to get it so that my laptop will wirelessly print with my printer that is hooked up to my desktop. when i open up my laptop and go to my network, i cannot see my other computer and the same goes for my desktop, but i can add my hp 4200 as default printer on my laptop but i get an error when i try to print. how do i fix thisHome networking Problems?
The wired desktop needs to have file and print sharing enabled as well as the firewall needs to allow the exception for file and print sharing before you will be able to see it or use it. If you are using a third party firewall you might need to do more configuration changes than you think. Also you may need to look at the settings on the router to ensure that the wired desktop is not in the DMZ zone as this could lead to complications on trying to access it.
Check the IP address on both machines by running the command window or going to the Network settings and make sure you are in the same IP range before pulling your hair out on why this wont work. Utilize the ping command from one computer to the other to ensure it at least ';Sees'; each other.Home networking Problems?
Have you shared the printer from your XP machine? You have to enable printer sharing before you can see/use it from another computer.
