How to ethernet network XP and Vista?

OK, I have an eMachines W3107 running XP and a Dell Dimension 4100 with Vista Home Premium. They both have an PCI ethernet adapters installed. How can I set it up so that they dont need a router to be networked? Can they both also go online if I connect a USB adapter to the eMachines so they both can go online at the same time?How to ethernet network XP and Vista?

Connect each machine to a multi (5) port switch, then they can talk to each other. If you go online with one or the other, that is another independent connection .
