You do not say whether you have set up the router (you say routers - have you more than one and if so have you two ISP's) so that it is already broadcasting. If you have not done this, then this must be done first as you will not be able to connect if it is not broadcasting. Once it is broadcasting it is very easy to setup the computers to connect to the internet. If you have not setup the router this is the most complex step and needs to be done first. Please let me know if you have setup this stage and I will help you with the next connection. Please get back to me.
Both deepa and miha49 are correct in telling you how to share files and the printer but they do not tell you how to connect to the router as far as I can see.I need help setting up a small home network...?
You need to go to control panel / Add Remove Programs. Click on Add/Remove Windows components. Make sure Networking Services is checked. Click on Details, then make sure Peer-to-peer is checked. Close out and let it install things if it needs to. You need this on both computers. You may be asked to reboot.
Do this on all machines. Go to My Computer, right click and select Properties. Click on the Computer Name tab. Click on the Change.... button. Under Member of, be sure Workgroup is selected, and give you network a name like MyPeerGroup. OK your way back out. You may have to reboot.
In Control Panel, go to Network Connections for your ethernet and wireless connections. Right click and select Properties. Click on the Advanced tab. Click on Settings under Windows Firewall. If it is On, click on the Exceptions tab. Make sure File and Printer Sharing is checked.
Now go to the computer with the printer. Go to Start / Printers and Faxes. Right click on the printer and select Sharing. Select Share this printer and give it a share name. Click OK.
Right click on Start then select Explore. On the directory tree on the left, right click on the folder you want to share with the other computers. Select Sharing and Security. Select Share this folder. Give it a name and fill in any other comments you want. Click on Permissions and give whatever permission you want the other computers to have.
Follow the same steps for the other folders you want to share on this computer. Repeat the process on the other computers for folders on that machine that you want to share with the other machines.
After that, you should be able to use Explorer and go to My Network Places at the bottom of the tree, and drill down until you see the other machine and the folder and printers that machine is sharing.
i,
I am assuming that both of your machines are running windows XP.
machine A will be your desktop and machine B will be your laptop.
I am also assuming that you are connected to the same network. if you don't know if you are on the same network you will do the following on computer A and B.
click start %26gt; run %26gt; in that box type ';cmd'; press ok. (without the '; '; just cmd)
a black box will come up. in the box type ipconfig /all and press ok.
expmale: c:\ipconfig /all
you will get allot of information. write down your host name and the IP adddress and the gateway of both machines.
exmaple:
host name: machine A
IP address: 10.10.10.3
subnet: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 10.10.10.1
do the same on machine B
host name: machine B
IP address: 10.10.10.4
subnet: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 10.10.10.1
IF the gatewa and host name are the same then your are on the same netowrk. The ip address the last number must be diffrent.
Now that you konw you are one same network and you not your host name and IP address. Lets configure your Priter to share.
Go to computer A:
Click on start %26gt; settings %26gt; printer and faxes.
right click the printer that you want to share and click sharing.
In the Sharing tab click the button that say Share this printer. leave the default name and click apply.
now you should see a hand under neath your printer. that means its shared.
God to host B: ';your laptop';
click on start %26gt; run
in the run box type \\hostname or \\IPaddress
example \\machine A or \\10.10.10.3
and press ok.
this will show you everthing that is shared on that computer. you should be able to view the printer.
Right click the printer and click connect.
you should be good to go.
Remember you have your have your machine A and the printer turned on to print from your laptop.
now to share a folder, you will do the same. on the machine A go to c:\folder name. right click and click sharing and security and under sharing click sare this folder. leave everything else defoult.
you should c the hand on the folder now you can \\hostname or \\ipadress form the other computer to get to that folder.
