How do I switch out my main computer in my home network (details inside)?

Ok. So I have two computers in the network currently. My main computer running the network is a PC with Windows 98. The other computer is a laptop running Vista Home Premium. I have not allowed file sharing (tried, didn't work, long story. lol). Not sure if that's even relevant... The PC is only sharing the modem with the laptop so I can have wireless internet, as far as I know, that's all the two share.... Um...yeah... What I want to do is switch my Win. 98 out for a Win. XP that we recently got second hand and we haven't figured out how to set it up to run our network. BTW, my brother and I who will be the ones trying to set up the network ourselves, are pretty much computer illiterate especially when it comes to networks. lolHow do I switch out my main computer in my home network (details inside)?
